The Science and Philosophy Behind In2Eat
Development of the In2Eat app is an interdisciplinary project involving computer science, health science, and nutrition. Our cutting-edge app is configured to improve diet quality while teaching users about intuitive eating, a philosophy used to help to build a healthy relationship with food.
Intuitive eating is a weight-neutral approach to food intake which is grounded in interoceptive awareness, the ability to sense and interpret internal body sensations. Someone who eats intuitively listens to internal cues in order to know when, what, and how much to eat. In2Eat's approach to intuitive eating is based on the 10 Principles developed by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995.
Intuitive eating promotes self-care and compassion while honoring body diversity. Malnutrition and poor health occurs when someone does not eat enough, but also when dietary intake is excessive. Of particular concern is regular consumption of food lacking in nutrition quality and increasing risk for chronic disease. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can occur even when the diet is abundant in calories, hence the need to encourage a high quality diet
